Movement

Proprioception by definition is a sense of our body's positioning in space. We gain understanding of this through our environment by various factors including force, speed, body positioning and movement. Children get most of their proprioceptive input in the school yard but when targeted specifically in the classroom this can look like commando crawling, animal walking, jumping activities, stretching, arching, and leaning teamed with infrequent stillness and/or opportunities to complete cognitive based tasks. Accessing the brain through movement has never been more fun!

Interoception will be weaved into the Sing Move Regulate program with a focus on body parts and body systems, particularly throughout the 'movement' part of the program. Kelly Mahler is a U.S based Occupational Therapist well known for her simple yet highly effective evidence based approach to improving awareness through interoception. She has an inspiring  story, it can be accessed here. Kelly's interoception curriculum will be the subtle guide to begin the children's journey inward.
